Heart Disease
Range of Conditions Affect the Heart
Heart disease refers to several types of heart conditions and is the leading cause of mortality in the United States (1 in 4 deaths). The most common type of heart disease, which can lead to heart attack, is coronary artery disease (CAD). Risk for heart disease can be minimized through life style changes—quitting smoking, lowering cholesterol, controlling high blood pressure, maintaining a healthy weight, and exercising. According to the American Heart Association, heart attack symptoms include:·
- Chest Discomfort – most heart attacks involve discomfort in the center of the chest that lasts more than a few minutes, or that goes away and comes back. It can feel like uncomfortable pressure squeezing, fullness or pain.·
- Shortness of Breath – with or without chest discomfort.·
- Other Signs – breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea or lightheadedness
