JOB SUMMARY:

The Family Practice Physician provides primary and urgent patient care in the ambulatory clinic setting. He/she sees all age groups, instituting appropriate diagnosis, treatment, follow-up, and referral for consultations when indicated. This position is an integral part of the health care team, which includes other Physicians, Podiatrists, Mid-level Practitioners, Registered Nurses, Licensed Vocational Nurses, Medical Assistants, Medical Receptionists, Pharmacy personnel, and Laboratory personnel, and members of the Dental, Outreach, Community Health Nursing, Behavioral Health Services, and Social Service Departments.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Duties of this position shall include, but are not limited to the following: (in appraisal format)

1. TECHNICAL SKILLS: Demonstrates proficiency in history taking and physical examinations of adults and children. Accurately performs basic lab tests

(e.g. reading microscopic urines, KOH preps of vaginal secretions, etc.) required for primary care. Demonstrates competence for all specialized procedures for which privileging is requested (e.g. exercise treadmill testing, flexible sigmoidoscopy, colposcopy, etc.). Appropriately documents all procedures in the medical records.

2. DIAGNOSTIC SKILLS: Appropriately interprets historical and physical examination data to arrive at accurate diagnosis. Orders laboratory and radiology studies when necessary to confirm diagnosis, or to rule out other differential diagnoses. Utilizes in-house resources prior to referring patient outside of RSBCIHI health care system. Appropriately documents all findings in the medical record.

3. THERAPEUTIC SKILLS: Accurately identifies and orders appropriate treatments. Utilizes Pharmacy formulary for pharmacological options. Orders appropriate follow-up for patient to assess results of treatment. Refers patient when necessary for treatments not available directly from RSBCIHI. Appropriately documents all plans and orders in the medical record.

4. HEALTH CARE GOALS OF RSBCIHI: Recognizes that the health care objectives of RSBCIHI emphasize primary care, health promotion, and disease prevention. Implements these objectives in the routine care of patients in our clinics. Maintains awareness of specific goals (e.g. pediatric immunizations, adults immunizations, annual PPD testing, cancer screening, etc.) via participation in Medical Department meetings and referring to the Program Administration Manual and Medical Department Manual. Practices managed care principles, and adheres to Contract Care protocols. Always utilizes internal resources first and refers to outside health providers only for those services not available directly from RSBCIHI, or when there services are not available in a timely manner.

5. NATIVE AMERICAN CULTURAL SENSITIVITY: Has an awareness and appreciation for the diversity of Native American cultural and spiritual values, recognizes how these values affect our interactions with Native Americans in the medical setting.

6. LEADERSHIP AND TEAM SKILLS: Functions as an effective member of the health care team, which includes nursing, clerical, pharmacy, and laboratory staff. Effectively communicates with all team members and coordinates everyone’s efforts to provide both efficient and high quality care to our patients. Sets the pace for efficient patient flow through the clinic.

7. ADMINISTRATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES: Participates in Medical Department staff meetings and clinic site meetings. Volunteers for, or accepts when asked by the Medical Director, special assignments, e.g. Medical Department Quality Management Sub-committees, Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee, etc.

8. PRODUCTIVITY: Delivers patient care in a manner that is thorough and elicits patient compliance within RSBCIHI guidelines:

 15 minutes for routine care of patients with chronic illnesses, and minor acute problems. Reschedules patients for longer visits when appropriate.

 60 minutes for complete history and physical examinations for annual visits, new patients, and disability exams.

 Other timeslots for special procedures, e.g. treadmills, flexible sigmoidoscopies, etc., should be stated in writing and given to the Site Manager and

Clinic Receptionist for appropriate scheduling.

 Average 14-16 primary care patient visits per 8-hour shift.

 Completes all pharmacy refills in a timely manner.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education & Experience

Education:

M.D. or D.O. degree.

Current California medical license.

Current DEA license.

American Board of Family Practice Certification.

Current ACLS certification.


Experience:

Two years of experience in an ambulatory care patient setting desirable.

License

Current CPR Certification that meets the guidelines from the American Heart Association or Red Cross (Can be obtained prior to orientation)


Valid California Driver’s License with a safe driving record, DMV record required. Must be insurable by the program’s insurance carrier.

Ability To

Must be able to work with the Indian Community, and be sensitive to the Indian culture and its needs.

Physical Demands

Must have excellent physical and emotional health.

The assignment will be carried out in a medical clinic setting. There is frequent exposure to contagious diseases. Walking and standing is frequent for long periods of time. Some sitting and lifting are required. The incumbent will be required to assist patients who are frail or handicapped. Driving will be required between clinics. The position is considered a uniformed service and a dress code is published.
