Kendall P. Shumway, DPM | ext. 115
Kendall P. Shumway, DPM, completed undergraduate work at Brigham Young University and then went on to Podiatry School at the California College of Podiatric Medicine in San Francisco. He spent his fourth year in San Antonio at the University of Texas, which is known internationally for its excellence in Diabetic Foot Care. After graduation, he completed a residency in General Podiatry and Foot Surgery at the Veterans Hospital in Phoenix, Arizona. Dr. Shumway is originally from Northern Arizona, right between the Apache and Navajo Indian Reservations. He enjoys time with his family and the outdoors.

Jayce Liang, FNP | ext. 118
Jayce Liang is a Family Nurse Practitioner who joined the Diabetes Program in 2009. She received her education and training at Loma Linda University School of Nursing. After graduation, she spent a year as a Family Nurse Practitioner in retail healthcare. She also comes with nursing experience at Loma Linda Medical Center working with cancer, surgical and medical adult patients. She is excited to be part of the Diabetes Team and hopes to play a part in building a healthier way of life in the community.

Claudia Magaña | ext. 128
Claudia Magaña is the Diabetes Program Administrative Assistant/ Healthy Heart Data Coordinator and joined the Diabetes Team in 2004. She provides a variety of administrative services for the Diabetes Program and Health Heart Program. She coordinates key components of the Diabetes Program and Healthy Heart Program activities, including education classes, clinics, patient appointments, health fairs, conferences, and other events. Claudia has a great interest in promoting health in the Native American community.

Marcia Ruhl, MS, MHA, MPH, RD | ext. 127
Marcia Ruhl is the Registered Dietitian and joined the Diabetes Program in 2005. She came to us from Patton State Hospital where she worked as a Clinical Dietitian. Her experience in nutrition was obtained at Loma Linda University Medical Center where she worked in with various patient populations including Endocrinology, Neurology, Neuro-Rehabilitation, Gastroenterology, Rheumatology, Nephrology, Pediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynecology. She has written on many topics, including pediatric diets, medical test diets, and nutrition considerations in the rehabilitation patient. Aside from nutrition, she worked for several years in the Emergency Medicine Department and was the Coordinator of Rehabilitation Management Systems at Loma Linda University Medical Center.

Antonia Roots, BS, CHFI, CJI | ext. 114
Antonia Roots, CHFS (formerly Barrett) has been with the Diabetes Program since 2006 as the Fitness Specialist. Antonia is the lead coordinator for the Annual Morongo Canyon Walk, the Health Fair Native Youth Olympic Games which was adapted from the "Mini Olympics", and the Native Fitness for Life Rewards Program. Antonia has three years experience in athletic training from the University of Redlands and the Canyon Trails Sports Medicine Clinic. Antonia also helped develop the personal training department and worked as a personal trainer at the Loma Linda University Drayson Center for three years with prostate cancer patients, physician referred clients, and taught a few health and wellness education class series. Antonia earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology (the study of human movement) at California State University San Bernardino and became certified as a Health and Fitness Specialist with the American College of Sports Medicine. In 2008, Antonia published her research on the accuracy of BMI (body mass index) compared to 7-site Skinfold Body Fat testing in college students in the International Council for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, Sport & Dance Journal. Antonia is motivated to partner with our tribes and empower them to take ownership of their lifestyle and strive to improve their quality of life through exercise by teaching classes and assist in coordinating wellness events/programs for their community. Antonia's mission is to "Teach Clients to Nurture Their Health through Exercise and Make Fitness a Habit!"

Ray Vega | ext. 130
Ray Vega joined the Diabetes Program in 2003 and is our Community Health and Tobacco Educator. He teaches about the traditional and medicinal use of tobacco and compares this to commercial use of tobacco. Ray started at RSBCIHI as our Mobile Medical Unit driver, and was soon trained to be the Retinopathy Technician for the Diabetes Program. Ray has a thirst for knowledge and continually seeks new information and skills. He exhibits a passion and deep understanding of the needs of our community, and demonstrates his dedication beyond the boundaries of work responsibilities. He volunteers to work for Conferences, Seminars, Pow Wows, Fiestas, and other special events. Ray also sits on the planning committee for the Men’s Wellness Conference where he contributes to our community’s well-being.

Darlene Lynch, RN | ext. 113
Darlene Lynch has worked at RSBCIHI for several years as the Charge Nurse for the Morongo Indian Health Clinic. She was interested in trying something new and joined the Diabetes Program in 2006. Now, she is the Diabetes Nurse Case Manager and works closely with the Healthy Heart Project participants. She has quickly been identified as a valued diabetes educator, and is proficient with various Diabetes Medications such as Byetta, Symlin, and Insulin. She upholds the Diabetes Standard of Care, and can manage any Diabetes issue that comes her way.

Martha Rodriguez | ext. 129
Martha Rodriguez joined the Team in November of 2007 after working a West Dermatology for four years. She is the Medical Assistant and one of the Mobile Medical Unit staff members for the Diabetes Program. Martha is a Native American with family ties in Indio and San Diego. Since she started with the program, Martha is an active member of the Women's and Family Wellness Committees, is the author of Martha's Journal in the quarterly newsletters, and established the Beautiful You women's group. Martha's greatest asset is her love for her patients. She consoles them when they are hurt from past and current hardships, by sharing lessons from her challenging and rough past, in order to motivate them to appreciate the little gifts that life brings and how to take ownership of their Diabetes care. Her goal is to make sure that her patients receive the best care, and have not only a healthy body, but mind and spirit to live a more fulfilling life. Martha is very innovative and her newest incentive products for our patients are the "Making a Change Toward Wellness ONE STEP AT A TIME" items, which are incorporated into the Native Fitness for Life Rewards Program and will be given out at clinics in Spring of 2010. According to Martha, there is no time like the present so "today is a new day to make a change in the right direction."

Angella White, RN
Angella joined the Diabetic Program team in May 2011 as a Diabetes Educator. She completed the covational nursing progra mat Chaffey College, the associate's degree in nursing from West Coast University and is pursing further studies in nursing administration at Vanguard University. She gained her nursing experience working with a number of health institutions providing a wide range of service including caring for medical, surgical and hospice patients. Angella also comes to the team with extensive hands-on experience in teaching, food science, food preparation, and culinary management. She is dedication to providing individuals with the tools, training and support necessary to change their behavior and accomplish their diabetes self-management goals. She believes that everyone can live a healthy lifestyle by exercising and eating appetizing, healthy foods if they are taught how to make healthy food choices.

Kimberly Morales Johnson
Kimberly is a Native American from the San Gabriel Band of Mission Indians, Gabrieleno/Tongva. She maintains her tribal traditions and continuity through teaching Native Youth California Indian Culture. Kimberly has been active in the Traditional Native American community since she was 9 years old. She has been a traditional California Indian basket weaver for over ten years. She has learned California Indian customs, crafts, songs, and her tribal language from elders, surrounding tribes and through being actively involved in her community.
She has taught as an elementary school teacker and California Indian Cultural Consultant for various educational entities. She has assisted in the development of culturally sensitive history curriculum for the State of California. She is currently serving as Tribal Secretary for The San Gabriel Band of Mission Indians as well as the Los Angeles City/ County Native American Commission. As traditional artist and presenter, she is dedicated to the perservation and continuance of Native American culture, insuring that the public is accurately education about American Indian History and our future generations are offered the opportunity to carry-on these traditions.
She graduated from the University of La Verne with her BA in Liberal Studies in 2006. She received her Master's degree in Public Health at Claremont Graduate University in 2011, and currently works as a Diabetes Educator with Riverside San Bernardino County Indian Health, Inc.

Kris Hamlin | ext. 182
Kris is the Diabetes Program Fitness Assistant. He completed a Bachelor of Exercise Science at La Sierra University, and has worked as a personal trainer for LA Fitness. While working for the company Physiotherapy, he conducted health screenings to measure clients level of fitness, including items such as mobility, strength, and blood pressure. Originally from Maryland, Kris has family ties to the Nanticoke Indians.
